strengthening global practice through research & Evaluation

Outward Bound International (OBI) is committed to building a stronger worldwide network of effective and resilient Outward Bound Schools. A central part of this commitment is generating credible evidence of program impact and sharing insights that advance outdoor and experiential learning globally.

Outward Bound International’s approach to research and evaluation is designed to strengthen impact, improve practice, and advance the field of outdoor and experiential education.

Through a combination of evidence-based tools, shared learning, and applied research, OBI supports Schools to clearly communicate their benefits and social impact in practical, usable formats.

At the same time, research findings are translated into resources that help Schools reflect on performance, refine practice, and continuously improve program effectiveness and impact.  Collectively, this work enables Outward Bound to contribute to and help shape global conversations on what effective outdoor adventure learning entails, ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of scholarly debate, innovation, and best practices.

The Outward Bound Global Alumni Survey has been developed by researchers from the University of Utah in collaboration with Outward Bound International (OBI), the organisation that provides oversight across the global Outward Bound network of Schools.

The survey aims to gain a better understanding of the long-term impact and enduring influence of Outward Bound programmes on individuals who have participated in an Outward Bound course over the past fifteen years. The findings will support OBI and its Schools in strengthening practice and ensuring that Outward Bound continues to offer transformative, meaningful, and authentic outdoor adventure experiences, grounded in challenge, reflection, and connection to the natural world.

Participation in this survey is entirely voluntary. All responses are anonymous and will be used solely for research and learning purposes by Outward Bound International. Survey data will be analysed and reported only in aggregated form in impact reports, research articles, or publications. Data will be stored securely and accessed only by the research team, and will be retained only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes of the research, in accordance with applicable data protection legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Outward Bound International would like to thank our Global Research Advisory Committee for their guidance in developing and implementing our research and evaluation strategy.
