For nearly two decades Outward Bound International has conducted program reviews in support of its member schools. Every two years schools are reviewed by a team of experienced peers who are external to the school hosting the review.

The Expected Profile of an OBI Lead Reviewer

The lead reviewer has appropriate training or relevant experience in risk management, safety, oversight, and assessment. Additionally, the reviewer has management experience in one or more of the areas of finance, human resources, administration, marketing, sales, customer service, participant screening, and operations (i.e. adventure activity delivery). He or she also has experience in conducting reviews, audits, inspections, assessments in the areas of risk, safety, quality, or similar. He or she is able to understand international differences arising from distinct cultures. He or she understands the educational purpose of Outward Bound. The lead reviewer will have attended an OBI program review training, or similar training in how to conduct an external review or audit.

The basic expectation is that a lead reviewer possesses competence and experience commensurate with the scope and scale of governance, management, systems, and operational complexities of the school that is to be reviewed.

Other Reviewers

In addition to Lead Reviewer, there are three other categories of review team member: 1) Assistant Reviewer; 2) Observer; 3) Technical Expert. Each has different competency and experience requirements. Team members are assigned to a category based on competency (ability, knowledge, and skills) and experience.
