Iain Peter, Executive Director

Iain Peter has held many prestigious jobs in the outdoor education field in the United Kingdom, and served as Chief Executive, Mountain Training Trust, Plas y Brenin for a decade. An internationally recognized mountain guide Iain has climbed major peaks such as Everest, Cerro Torre in Patagonia, and the Eiger North Face. He continues to be an active and committed climber, mountaineer and skier.

He has served as Chairman of the Risk Management Committee of Outward Bound Trust UK, and he has been involved in the setting of standards, training and assessment of candidates for all UK mountaineering qualifications.  He is an internationally qualified Mountain Guide.

SARAH WILEY, Strategic PROJECTS Manager

Sarah is an experienced educational leader who has been actively involved in adventure and experiential education initiatives and programs for more than 30 years. Former instructor, Program Director and then Executive Director at Outward Bound Canada, Sarah was the Chair of OBI’s Operations Committee before joining the staff team in 2019. Sarah supports OBI’s strategic priorities with a particular focus on research and evaluation, global communications and fundraising.

Sarah has an honors degree in Political Science, a teaching degree in Outdoor and Experiential Education, a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and a MBA with a Specialization in Leadership. Sarah is an active outdoors person and enjoys climbing, hiking, running, skiing and spending time with her husband and son in the out of doors.

mike Armstrong, risk management

Mike Armstrong oversees Risk Management at OBI. In his role, Mike works with Outward Bound Executive Directors and/or Safety & Risk Managers across the global Outward Bound network to continue the advancement and improvement of the OBI Risk Management Review (RMR) system. Mike provides oversight of the RMR system and works with OBI’s stakeholders to examine and strategize ways that the Risk Management Review is first and foremost a system for learning, reflection and feedback so that actions and improvement can be implemented. Mike has worked for Outward Bound Schools around the world for the last 28 years, having started as an Assistant Instructor at the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School in 1995 in Oregon, USA.  Mike worked as an Instructor for Outward Bound Australia in 1995-96 and as the Head of Operations for Outward Bound Hong Kong from 2018-2022. He also currently works for the Red Cross as the Disaster Program Manager for Western North Carolina and as the Risk Management Advisor for the Cornerstone Safety Group.

richard nelson, office 365 co-ordinator

Richard is a highly experienced, innovative and passionate Technology Leader who helps deliver engaging transformational solutions and is driven by the belief that Technology should help, not hinder, people and organizations. Richard is the IT Manager at the Outward Bound Trust in the UK, where he has worked for the last 17 years. At Outward Bound International, Richard supports the global membership in their adoption, coordination and management of the global Microsoft 365 platform as a means to increase efficiencies and enhance and expand communication and collaboration throughout the network.

sara Morrison, social media coordinator

Sara has worked for Outward Bound since 2007, first as an instructor and then eventually moving to Fundraising and Development at the North Carolina Outward Bound School, part of the OB USA network of Schools. Her work with Outward Bound has taken her to Florida, Australia and North Carolina where she currently resides in Asheville with her family.  Sara’s role with OBI is to help spread the word through OBI’s various social media platforms about the amazing impact Outward Bound has all over the globe .
