Thompson Island

Located on a lush 157-acre island in the middle of Boston Harbor, Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center (TIOBEC) create extraordinary and challenging growth opportunities for youth in their early adolescence.

During the school year, they operate the only Outward Bound middle school in the world, as well as the Choices Program. This program brings students in Boston public schools to the island for five-day expeditions involving ropes courses, camping, climbing and diversity training. In the summer, the island offers gender separate expeditions for 12 to 14 year-old girls and boys. The school also provides environmental education program in partnership with the New England Aquarium, long summer expeditions for at-risk youth, contract courses individually designed for schools and youth groups, and professional development programs for corporate clients.

Some of the activities include ropes course initiatives, rock climbing, sailing, natural sciences, backpacking and camping.
