David Kong (Hong Kong) – Chair OBI

David Kong is the managing director of his family business in shipping and logistics based in Hong Kong. David grew up in Vancouver and graduated from the University of British Columbia. In Hong Kong, David served in several government advisory committees as well as on not-for-profit boards. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Charter Institute of Transport & Logistics. He has been a member of the Outward Bound Hong Kong Trust since 1990 and was the chairman of the board from 2006 to 2009. He is a past Commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, enjoys inshore and offshore yacht racing. He is an avid skier, scuba diver and hiker.

John Atkin (Australia) – Vice Chair & CHAIR, GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

John and his family have a long association with Outward Bound Australia having completed the standard 26-day course in 1975 following in the footsteps of his two older brothers and sisters. His three sons have each completed the standard 26-day course in Australia and his daughter did the standard Outward Bound New Zealand course at Anikiwa. John was a member of the Board of Outward Bound Australia from 2007 until 2019, the last four years as Chair. John is a professional non-executive director with more than 35 years of experience in legal, professional and financial services in Australia and Asia. John chairs the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Qantas Super Fund and he is a Director of IPH Limited and Integral Diagnostics Limited (both listed on the ASX). Previously, John was Chief Executive Officer of The Trust Company Limited, Managing Partner of Blake Dawson (now Ashurst) and a Corporate and Mergers & Acquisitions partner at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King & Wood Mallesons).

 

Colin Maund (UK) – Treasurer & CHAIR, Finance/FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Colin Maund graduated from the London School of Economics (LSE). Colin is Chairman of Achilles Group. He set up the company in the UK in 1993 and was responsible for its international growth into 26 countries. Colin led the sale of the business in 2008 to a Private Equity firm, HgCapital. Colin has been actively involved in The Outward Bound Trust of which Achilles is a Patron Company Member. Colin was awarded the UK Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2009 for IT Services. Colin was appointed a Trustee of The Outward Bound Trust in March 2012.

Nicholas Conceicao (Singapore) – CHAIR, OPERATIONS COMMITTEE

Nicholas Conceicao’s career in outdoor education and adventure learning spans over two decades at Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) and other outdoor pursuit centres. Nicholas was instrumental in the policy formulation of the 2016 National Outdoor Adventure Education Masterplan including development plans for OBS@Coney. He undertook strategic roles in the operational expansion of the MOE-OBS Challenge Programme for all Secondary 3 students, the re-development of two Outward Bound training camps at Pulau Ubin and setting-up of the first-ever purpose-built adventure learning centre for children known as SPARKc@OBS. He was also credited with establishing bilateral training partnerships and overseas youth programmes with Outward Bound schools in Brunei Darussalam, Croatia, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia (Lumut & Sabah), Oman, Taiwan, South Africa and Vietnam. Nicholas led his team to host the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games Culture and Education Programme at OBS, Pulau Ubin for more than 1,500 national athletes and coaches. Nicholas was also a co-organiser for the 2011 Outward Bound International Staff Symposium hosted by OBS. In 2010, Nicholas was awarded the National Day Public Administration Medal (Bronze) for his contributions in the public service.

Pamela Fralick (Canada) – GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

Pamela Fralick is an experienced leader who has been fostering positive change in Canada’s health sector for decades. Throughout her career, Ms. Fralick has distinguished herself in a variety of senior roles. As the President of Innovative Medicines Canada, Ms. Fralick leads the industry association for Canada’s innovative pharmaceutical companies, working with its members and communities to ensure Canadians have access to the medicines they need, when they need them. Prior to joining Innovative Medicines Canada, Ms. Fralick was President and CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society, Canada’s largest health charity. Ms. Fralick previously served as president and CEO of the Canadian Healthcare Association (CHA) and as CEO of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. True to her commitment to the health and well-being of Canadians, Ms. Fralick has served on numerous prestigious boards and collaboratives across Canada.  She has been active in many organizations as a senior volunteer, including the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research, Triathlon Canada and the International Triathlon Union. Ms. Fralick has a BA in French and psychology and an MA in developmental psychology from Carleton University, as well as a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Queen’s University. She also holds an ICD.D designation. She is trilingual – in English, French and German – and is an accomplished artist and athlete.

Grant Faber (New Zealand) – FINANCE/FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Grant Faber possesses a wide background with Corporate and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in New Zealand, Australia, Norway, UK, and USA. Grant initially focused on management systems development, project management, and strategic planning before assuming line management roles. Leaving the corporate sector in 1989, his focus moved to building up his own group of companies which were built into industry leading positions in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Over-the-Counter Pharmaceutical sectors before sale to multinational corporates. His involvement continues with shareholdings in a number of start up and early stage ventures. He maintains strong interest and involvement in a number of non profit sectors, including Youth Development, the Arts, Conservation and Local Community. He is a past Chairman of Whangarei Art Museum Trust, a Trustee of Outward Bound (New Zealand) Foundation, Vice Chairman of Outward Bound (New Zealand) Trust, a Director of Outward Bound International Inc, a past Chairman of Discover Whangarei Heads Tourism Group Inc, a past Chairman of Hundertwasser Art Centre Project, a Trustee of Whangarei Visitor Group Trust, and a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. Grant is also an alumnus of Outward Bound New Zealand, having completed a classic course in 1972.

Hilal Al Mawali (OMAN)  – GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

Hilal worked with the Government of Oman for many years before moving to Shell in 1996, where he held several senior positions, until 2017. During his 21 years of service in Shell, Hilal headed the HR function, Staff Development, Corporate and Communication function, Stakeholders & Reputation Management and CSR. During his service with Shell, the company won many external recognitions, including His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Award for CSR, Ministry of Manpower Award for Omanisation (employment of locals), Gulf Cooperation Council Award for localization and Royal Oman Police Award for Road Safety. Hilal is one of the founders of Outward Bound Oman, where he took the lead to establish Outward Bound in Oman. He then served as the Chairman of Outward Bound Oman for 8 years, 2009 to 2017. During this time, and after the support from His Majesty the Sultan, Outward Bound Oman saw steep growth in terms of number of participants, employees and the establishment of permanent training facilities in different parts of the Country. In November 2017, Hilal was elected to the board of Outward Bound International. In the past, Hilal also participated in various boards, including Oman Road Safety Association, were he was the Deputy Chair, a member of the Training Committee at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Secretary to the Board at Shell Oman Marketing Company. Hilal has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the UK. He is passionate about people’s development and this was recognised by his winning an award from Shell International for his work in Omanisation. He also enjoys traveling and seeing different parts of the world.

Henry Morse (USA) – RISK MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Henry Morse Jr. is retired from the business world, having spent his career in the energy industry working for a gas and electric utility, and a natural gas pipeline company. He currently serves on several non-profit Boards. He has served on various Outward Bound School Boards in the US since 1998, including the former Pacific Crest Outward Bound School, the Northwest Outward Bound School, Outward Bound USA and the Outward Bound Services Group. When the Northwest Outward Bound School was founded in 2011, he served as the initial volunteer Executive Director during its start up. He currently serves on the Finance and Risk Management Committees of the OBI Board. In addition to traveling with his wife Terry, Henry spends his time in many outdoor activities. He annually undertakes multi-week solo backpacking trips, and peak bagging “14ers” in Colorado, in addition to skiing, hiking, kayaking and golf. When the weather keeps him indoors, he is a fine woodworker.

laura kohler (USA)

 

Laura Kohler is Senior Vice President – Human Resources, Stewardship & Sustainability, and Member, Board of Directors Kohler Co. Laura is a business leader who is passionate about driving purposeful change in our workplace and world while serving alongside three Kohler family members leading one of the oldest and largest privately held companies in America. Under her leadership, Kohler’s global social impact strategy focuses on environmental sustainability, Innovation for Good, stewardship, associate volunteerism and the renowned Arts/Industry program. Her passion for making the world a better place is evidenced by Kohler’s partnership with many nonprofit organizations, particularly with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, World Vision, Water Mission and others to address safe water and sanitation around the world. Laura is a longtime and avid supporter of community, education, sustainability and the arts. She contributes her time and talents to impact organizations such as Outward Bound USA (Board Chair 2016-2019), Duke University – Trinity College Board of Visitors, Lawrence University – President’s Advisory Council, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Secretary), Kohler Trust for Arts and Education, Kohler Trust for Preservation, Kohler Trust for Clean Water and the Kohler Foundation, Inc. Laura holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Duke University and a master’s degree in fine arts from Catholic University of America.

deirdre lander (Hong Kong)

Deirdre Lander is an experienced, commercially focused management consultant, corporate executive and educator with deep expertise helping organizations implement their business strategy and improve their performance through effective people management. Relocating from Australia to Hong Kong in 2004, she has participated in the dynamic growth of Asian businesses, working in Hong Kong, China and most other countries across the region. Deirdre is actively involved in her profession and the community, including the role of Adjunct Professor at Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat Sen University Guangzhou, China and teaching faculty for a global remuneration membership based organisation. She has been involved with Outward Bound Hong Kong since 2017, first as Chair of their Professional Programs Committee, and currently as a Trustee and member of the Executive Committee. She is also a Non-Executive Director of an Australian company sourcing and supplying chilled organic beef to domestic and international markets. Deirdre holds a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and Master of Arts (Psychology) honours year from Australian Universities and a Secondary School Teaching Certificate. She is a registered psychologist and graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. As well as practicing yoga and gym, in her leisure time Deirdre is an avid hiker, skier and loves adventure travel.

richard winter (Hong Kong)

Richard is Senior Advisor of China Tonghai, a listed financial services group in Hong Kong. Richard graduated from Edinburgh University in 1974 and qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte Haskins and Sells in 1980.  After periods with Deloittes in Nairobi and Edinburgh, he arrived in Hong Kong in 1985 to work as Manager of the Corporate Advisory Service Department of Ernst & Whinney.  In 1987 he joined Standard Chartered, where he worked for 12 years, to become Managing Director, Investment Banking in charge of North East Asia.  In January 2000, he joined Deloitte Corporate Finance Limited as Managing Director, with responsibilities to establish and develop their corporate finance capability.  Richard left with his team in 2002 to become Deputy Chairman and Shareholder in Quam Limited, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which was sold in 2017 to China Tonghai Group. He is a member of the Securities and Futures Commission Takeovers and Mergers Panel and the Stock Exchange Listing Review Committee. Richard has been involved with Outward Bound Hong Kong for over 10 years in various honorary capacities, ranging from Chair of the Charity Ball Committee, Chair of the Adventure and Multi Race Committee, to Chairman of the Board.

guy williams (UK)

 

Guy Williams was appointed CEO of U-POL Ltd in September 2015. Prior to this, Guy was Managing Director of AkzoNobel’s largest Decorative Paints division with responsibility for major household brands. He is extremely passionate on giving young people the best start in life through opportunities and development. He has been a very active trustee of The Outward Bound Trust (UK) since 2014. Additionally, he has been a board member of the British Coatings Federation (BCF) since 2016 and was subsequently appointed the role of president in April 2020 and since the beginning of 2020, is a trustee for Autoraise, a charity in the UK Automotive industry that is focused on the creation of apprenticeships within bodyshops. Guy was born and raised in North Wales and continues to be based there today.
